Back Bencher Class โ€” Privacy Policy

Back Bencher Class ("we," "our," "the site") provides free, AI-powered study tools for Class 9โ€“12 and college students. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, how that information is used, how our advertising works, and the choices available to you. We've written it in plain language wherever possible, because a privacy policy nobody actually reads isn't much of a policy at all.

1. Overview & Scope

Back Bencher Class was built on a simple principle: a student generating a quiz or a chapter summary shouldn't have to hand over personal information to do it. There is no account system, no login, and no requirement to provide your name, email, phone number, or school details anywhere on this site in order to use any tool โ€” the Study Generator, Scan & Solve, Timetable, Flashcards, Paper Generator, or Daily 10. This policy applies to everything you do on backbencherclass (and any pages under this domain), and it's written to cover both what we do collect and, just as importantly, what we deliberately choose not to.

2. What Data We Collect

We keep the data we collect to the minimum needed to make the tools work. Broadly, it falls into two categories:

2.1 Information you type into a tool

When you use the Study Generator, Timetable, Flashcards, or Paper Generator, you type in details like your class, subject, board or university, and chapter or topic. This information is used purely to generate the study material you're asking for โ€” it is not linked to your name, is not tied to any persistent user profile, and is not stored in a database associated with you as an identifiable person. If you use Scan & Solve, the photo you upload of a question is processed to generate a solution and is not permanently retained or added to any training dataset tied to you.

2.2 Information collected automatically

Like almost every website, our hosting provider and any analytics or advertising services we use may automatically log some basic technical information โ€” things like your browser type, approximate location (typically city or region level, derived from IP address), device type, and which pages you visited. This is standard log-file information (covered in more detail in Section 5) and is not used to build an identifiable profile of you as an individual student.

2.3 What we do NOT collect

  • We do not require or request your name, email address, or phone number to use any study tool.
  • We do not ask for your school name, roll number, or any other identifying academic record.
  • We do not store your uploaded question photos in a personal file linked to you.
  • We do not sell personal data, because we don't collect enough of it to sell in the first place.

3. How We Use Tool Inputs

Every input you provide โ€” your class, subject, board, chapter, or a photographed question โ€” is sent in real time to generate the specific piece of study material you requested: a quiz, a summary, a set of PYQs, a timetable, a flashcard deck, or a solved answer. This happens as a live request-and-response process. We do not maintain a searchable personal history of everything you've ever generated, and we do not build a long-term academic profile that follows you from one visit to the next. Each tool session is effectively self-contained: you provide inputs, the tool generates an output, and that exchange isn't stitched together with your past visits into a personal record.

Because the underlying AI generation is handled through a processing service, your inputs do pass through that service to produce a response โ€” this is a standard and necessary part of how any AI-powered tool works, whether it's this site or any other AI study app. We choose processing partners that don't require you to create an account or hand over identifying details, and we do not authorize the use of your specific study inputs for advertising profiling.

4. Cookies & Third-Party Advertising

Back Bencher Class stays free through standard, non-intrusive advertising, similar to how most free educational and news websites operate. This section explains how that works.

4.1 Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. We (and our advertising and analytics partners) may use cookies to remember basic preferences, understand aggregate site usage (like which pages are visited most), and serve advertising. You can disable cookies at any time through your browser settings; doing so may affect some non-essential site features but will not prevent you from using the core study tools.

4.2 Google AdSense & Similar Ad Networks

We may display ads served through Google AdSense or comparable advertising networks. These third-party vendors may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings, and many ad networks also participate in industry opt-out tools such as the Digital Advertising Alliance's consumer choice page. Where required by applicable regulation (including protections for younger users, covered further in Section 7), ads shown on this site are configured to be non-personalized rather than behaviorally targeted.

4.3 What Advertising Partners Do Not Get From Us

We do not pass your name, email, school, class, board, or the specific content of your study inputs to advertising partners. Any data shared with ad networks is limited to the standard, aggregated, non-identifying technical signals those networks use across the wider web (such as browser type or approximate region) โ€” not the personal or academic details you type into our study tools.

5. Log Files & Analytics

Like most websites, our servers and any analytics tools we use (such as basic visit-counting services) automatically collect standard log-file data: IP address, browser type, internet service provider, date and time stamp, referring/exit pages, and possibly the number of clicks. This information is used in aggregate โ€” to understand traffic patterns, diagnose technical issues, and improve site performance โ€” and is not used to identify individual users personally. This information is not linked to anything that is personally identifiable.

6. Data Security

We take reasonable, industry-standard precautions to protect the limited data that does pass through this site, including serving the site over a secure (HTTPS) connection and routing AI-processing requests through a proxy rather than exposing any backend credentials directly to your browser. That said, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Because we deliberately avoid collecting sensitive personal information in the first place, the practical risk in the event of any technical issue is significantly reduced compared to a site that requires account sign-ups.

7. Children's Information (COPPA)

Back Bencher Class is used by students across a wide age range, including some who are under 13. We take children's privacy seriously and design the site with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar child-privacy principles in mind, even though the site does not require account creation from any user, child or adult.

  • We do not knowingly collect personal information (name, email, address, phone number) from children under 13, because no tool on this site requires that information to function.
  • Advertising shown on pages likely to be accessed by younger students is configured to be non-personalized, meaning it is not based on tracking a child's individual browsing behavior across the web.
  • We do not permit persistent user profiling of any visitor, child or adult, for the purpose of long-term behavioral advertising tied to an identifiable individual.
  • If a parent or guardian believes their child has somehow provided personal information through this site (for example, through a free-text field not intended for that purpose), they can contact us using the details in Section 11, and we will investigate and delete that information promptly.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to be involved in and monitor their children's online activities generally, and we welcome any questions about how this site handles information related to younger students.

8. Third-Party Links

This Privacy Policy applies only to Back Bencher Class. Our site may occasionally link out to third-party websites โ€” for example, a board's official exam website when we reference official past papers. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of external sites, and we encourage you to review the privacy policy of any third-party website you visit.

9. Your Choices & Rights

Because Back Bencher Class does not require an account and does not maintain a persistent personal profile tied to your identity, there is generally no personal data "on file" for you to request, correct, or delete beyond what's described above. If you have specific concerns โ€” for example, about a cached response, a submitted contact form message, or advertising cookies set in your browser โ€” you can:

  • Clear your browser's cookies and site data at any time through your browser settings.
  • Opt out of personalized advertising through Google's Ads Settings or your device's ad preferences.
  • Contact us directly (Section 11) with any specific question or request, including deletion of a message you submitted through our Contact form.

10. Consent & Updates to This Policy

By using Back Bencher Class, you consent to this Privacy Policy and to the ways described here that data is collected and used. We may update this policy from time to time โ€” to reflect a new tool, a change in our advertising setup, or updated legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically, especially before continuing to use the site after a change. Continued use of the site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

11. Contact Us

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy, how a specific tool handles your inputs, or a concern related to a child's use of this site, please reach out through our Contact page. We read every message and will respond to genuine privacy questions or requests as promptly as we can.
